Eggo Waffles

Kellogg Company announced that there will be a shortage of Eggo waffles until next spring due to production problems. People are extremely upset that they won't have them for months. Some eBay sellers are trying to sell their boxes for $49!

I am not a fan of frozen waffles and haven't had Eggo for awhile, but can they really be that much different/better than other brands? Is it just brand loyalty or is there something special about these? I just can't imagine loving a processed/manufactured food so much, but maybe I am missing something.....

They did a funny little piece on that on Morning Edition today. I haven't had a frozen waffle in a million years, but yea - if it's specific to Eggo, there are certainly alternatives!

I'll fess up to enjoying the occasional Eggo waffle. We buy them in bulk at Sam's for the kids for breakfast. They are convenient to have on hand, but if we can't buy them for a while it won't really make a difference.

They're really just syrup delivery devices anyway.

I never noticed much difference between the store brand and Eggo. The only time I buy brand specific is if I'm after a particular flavor or a healthier version.

And I don't like syrup or butter. I eat them plain, usually blueberry but sometimes one of the other fruit flavors.

It sounds like a brilliant marketing move to me!

A shortage? It's flour & eggs, how can there be a shortage??

I've recently gotten into the Kashi waffles every one in a while for a nice change of pace for breakfast.

Tovie - I'm with you. Don't like syrup. Can't figure out why people would put butter on waffles. I eat mine w/jam (which is probably more strange than butter, but I like it!)

The news piece I heard said that they were claiming it was due to a plant flooding in GA, but what they supposedly aren't saying is that listeria was also found in the plant.

Yeah, when I make them myself, I put jam on them. I buy the frozen ones with fruit so figure they don't need jam.

I also put jam on pancakes.

Seems like about a year or so ago, I was told there were no Nabisco Saltines on the shelf because of a fire at the plant and they would be in short supply or months or a year. He even told me what day the deliveries were made at the stores here so I could watch for them. He had one case, so I bought a box for my DH who was sick and wanting soup and crackers. Those went pretty fast and I wondered if I'd be able to find any more. I never saw an empty shelf again after that week. I'm glad I didn't go to ebay to buy some for $49.

I wonder what the shipping is for frozen waffles.

Oh yea, whatever happened to the rice shortage?? I forgot about that.
But commodities are, I would think, a lot easier to manipulate in the news than branded products. Here's the actual story from NPR.

Okay, you can throw things at me if you want but the woman they interviewed complaining is a SAHM. Now, really, you can't break out the waffle iron and have some fun with the kiddos by making waffles? And I agree wholeheartedly, they freeze wonderfully and it has to cost pennies to make them at home and save the landfills from the packaging if nothing else.

I'm a SAHM and I do break out the waffle iron from time to time (usually on weekends), but I do have to say that at one time, my daughter only wanted pancakes for breakfast. I made them from scratch for about a week or so, but I eventually couldn't do it anymore (I was pregnant at the time) and bought a mix (she wanted pancakes everyday for probably a month or more). It was so much easier for her pancake phase. So, I can see the convenience of having the Eggo waffles. Also, not all SAHM are cooks.

We keep frozen waffles all the time. My kids like them for breakfast--and my son likes to make them. We don't typically eat them w/ syrup--it's butter & cinnamon or peanut butter. I have a limited amount of time in the morning (unless I start getting up before I actually go to bed), so using the waffle iron during the week is just not practical. It's possible, but I just don't want to. And, frankly, they prefer the frozen ones. I do buy store brand, but I'll admit the Eggos taste a little better. Sure, I could make my own, then freeze them. But they don't fit in my toaster, I have no toaster oven, and I don't like them reheated in the microwave. I could use the oven, but that's not practical, and if I heat up the waffle iron to reheat, then I could have just made them from scratch fresh. So, frozen waffles meet our weekday breakfast needs. I don't see them any worse/better than using cold cereal--they are a convenience and my kids will actually eat them!

We break out the waffle iron if we're having waffles for dinner. For breakfast, nope, that requires I be conscious- so not happening until the second cup of coffee is going in. (And by that time the natives are restless.) I make everything from scratch in my kitchen: pizza, bread, rolls, salad dressing, pasta sauce, yogurt, baked goods, crackers, etc. I think I can live with the small amount of packaging and preservatives in a box of waffles.

Maybe it's a peanut butter issue I don't buy them often but I love Eggos with PB&J for breakfast. Store-brands that I've tried don't have the same chewy/crispy texture nor do those I make myself. Maybe I should try freezing the homemade ones? There's a flax waffle in the organic section that I find is similar in texture to Eggos. Can't recall the name.

Hlao,

Perhaps you are thinking of the VANS brand?

I haven't had Eggos in years, but had them quite often growing up.

There are signs in the frozen food section of my local Publix declaring that there is a national shortage of Eggo waffles. Interesting because the shelves are bare where the "kid" waffles usually are. The Nutrigrain whole wheat Eggo waffles are in plentiful supply, though.

Nature's Path has frozen organic waffles, both flax and blueberry. I've found them at Whole Foods as well as my local supermarket.
