I don't have a lot of choices where I live and really couldn't justify buying off the internet so I bought fresh from the grocery store. The organic ones were only 8 pounds, didn't want to do 3 so I bought one that's 22 pounds.

I picked "something else" since technically I'm not buying a turkey. We are having dinner at my DH's aunt's house, and all I have to make is dessert

Since I couldn't check more than one I voted for turkey from a local farmer. But our turkey will be an organic, heritage, local (10 miles away!) turkey. We've been buying the heritage turkeys from our local farmer the last 8 years. They are fresh so I don't have to de-thaw them and they cook up easily and are moist and flavorful. We won't go back to a Broad Breasted White after having a the heritage (typically he raises the Bourban Red breed), plus we're committed to our farmer!

I am getting a fresh turkey at the local butcher. I can't give up all that fridge room to defrost a frozen bird.

This year, about a mile from my house, I noticed a temporary turkey "village." There were about 50 beautiful birds enclosed in wire fencing, just waiting until, I guess, this week. In fact, I put a little piece on my blog about them:

I'm not buying one. When I pulled a smaller one out of the chest freezer to put on the grill this summer, I discovered another larger one hiding in the bottom. The freezers were all empty after Ike, so I guess we took advantage of the free turkey offers and stocked up (I must have gotten 3 or 4). I feel like I ought to go buy a new one, but

Hubbell & Hudson is offering all the fancy birds. I'd like to try one later for just us -- when I don't have to feed a huge crowd. I'm sorry, but I am not paying $8-10 a lb for a free-range, organic or other fancy bird for my niece to put ketchup on and throw most of it away.

As the lone vegan in the family, I ordered for myself the Hazelnut En Croute Cranberry Roast(see link), and I will share with the rest of my family if they want any. My Mom already ensured me she will make room in the oven for my pretty puff pastry roast. After all, besides the turkey itself, everything else my mother makes is pretty much vegan. Not as a favor to me, but she is just not much of a butter/cheese/milk person.

I have not tried it yet, but I will let you know if it's as good as it looks!

I checked "other" because ours is a fresh, free range one, but not organic.

i'm veg now and don't make the turkey, but when i did, it was always fresh, free range. exception: the first time i made one, got a big frozen monster. what a nightmare. after that, it was fresh every time, ordered ahead, never let me down.

I selected "something else" because I won the church raffle for a turkey!! So mine only cost the $3 for the raffle tickets. I just picked it up today from the meat market where the bird was, it is a fresh 14 pounder.

I couldn't resist 30 cents a pound for a turkey. It's just the two of us this year, so a 10 lb. turkey was very economical for us.

Wow! Mine were 69 cents a pound, and I thought that was a great deal!

We don't have a big choice here but I ended up getting a frozen turkey breast from Sam's Club. There are only four of us eating turkey and we all prefer the white meat so this made sense to me.

There will just be three of us this year. So, I got a smallish, frozen turkey breast.

Besides .... it's all about the side dishes at our house. None of us are big turkey fans. Stuffing ... well, we fight over the last bits of stuffing.

That's so funny . . . I used to LOVE ketchup on my turkey. I forgot about that until reading what you wrote just now.

I suppose I should answer too . . . we're not having turkey--we never really liked it and have taken to having a super-small family dinner and carving out some new traditions. I've got a post on that here http://nourishnetwork.com/2009/11/17...ew-traditions/.

So Guatemalan Pollo en Jocon it is for us!
