Question Funny Question (Orzo)

So I bought some orzo for a salad I plan to make and realized I don't have one of those mesh strainers, just a regular collander. I think the orzo will fall through the holes, they seem big. So how do I strain it without most of it going down the drain?

You could use a slotted spoon (have you seen the kind Giada uses on her show?). Or, how about draining a little at a time through a coffee filter?

Got an old knee-hi stocking? That'd do in a pinch... Or even old panty hose... wash them first!

The coffee filter idea is great, thanks!

LOL LakeMartinGal, I will be sure to wash the hose if I have to resort to using them

I have made orzo many times and was trying to think how I strained mine....well i've always made a recipe that just incorporated it, like the Creamy Parmesan Orzo; never have had to strain it!

Really, you could just pour the whole batch into your regular colander, big holes notwithstanding. The orzo will catch itself (ok, so you might lose just a few that manage to squiggle through). Honest! I work as a cook in a deli and we have large colanders with big holes and I use them all the time for draining orzo and even rice! Works just fine. It just get dumped from the big pots (think 8 quarts or bigger) into the colander, and believe me, we don't lose much!

Yeah, really - don't worry, the orzo will be just fine drained in a collander. I do it all the time.
