    substitute for Major Grey's Chutney

I'm making the Barefoot Contessa's curried chicken wraps and the store I was in didn't have Major Grey's Chutney which goes in the dressing (1/4 cup). I've never had the chutney, and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest anything or any combination of things that might sub. Is it spicey? Sweet? Savory?

    Thanks for any assistance!

Major Grey chutney is made from mangoes, so it definitely has a sweet flavor to it. However, it also contains vinegar and spices, so it has a kick as well. In many Indian curry dishes, I think the chutney reallys adds the "sparkle" to the flavor (sorry to tell you that). Maybe try some apricot jam, with a little tobasco??

Ingredients in the Silver Palate chutney (Cooks illustrated's favorite)
Mangoes, Onions, Sugar, Vinegar, Lemon, Garlic, Ginger, Tabasco Sauce, and Secret Spices.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks! This helps a lot. I have a jar of never-opened mango and lime chutney I got at a farmer's market. With your suggestions, I think I can tweak it to get the sparkle! A little tabasco, a little lemon if it needs it.
